Alchemy… the word itself brings to mind great mystery and adventure!
One definition of alchemy is: a medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to achieve the transmutation of base metals into gold.
It’s a pretty compelling idea to think that if we could turn ordinary metals into gold we would achieve unlimited wealth. And if our motives were pure we could use this wealth to help solve a number of the world’s problems.
However, on closer examination, our lives and actions on Earth would still be short-lived and limited by the usual eventualities associated with old age and death.
And as the saying goes, you can’t take it with you. But even if you could, you might just discover things don’t quite work out as expected. Consider the following anecdote:
Soon after dying, a man discovered he could actually pack a few things to take with him to the heaven world. After much thought, he decided the most valuable thing he could take with him was a suitcase filled with gold. So he gathered everything together and headed for the pearly gates.
When the man got there, he was greeted by a great angel who welcomed him home.
Eyeing the man’s suitcase, the angel said: I see you prepared for the journey. What did you bring?
And the man replied: A suitcase full of gold!
With a twinkle in his eye, the great angel replied: Well, come on it but I’m not sure I understand why anyone would want to bring “chunks of pavement” into this world! ~
Alchemy is also defined as a power or process of transforming something common into something special.
Those who are familiar with the process of refining precious metals are aware of the intense heat needed to liquefy many metals. Heat is also necessary to release impurities and foreign material from the pure metal. Separation of the impure matter or dross occurs in two ways:
• a portion is vaporized and passes into the atmosphere of the room wherein the refining furnace is operating
• unwanted substance is brought to the surface and skimmed off by the refiner
Spiritually speaking, this description of alchemy and the process of refining precious metals is a great metaphor for how the violet flame works when we use it. The violet flame is the friend of every alchemist and it begins to produce perfection everywhere it is called into action!
